Local Shoplifting Update

You raised shoplifting as a concern, so here’s a quick local update.

On Wednesday 13th August 2026, officers from Bellingham and Sydenham SNT arrested a male who was shown as wanted for failing to appear at court in relation to theft offences. When officers conducted the post-arrest search of the male, items from a local shop were found and recovered; when speaking with the shop's manager, it was ascertained that the male had stolen from the shop mere minutes prior to being stopped by police. Therefore, the male was further arrested for shoplifting. The male has been charged and remanded to court, and he has his first appearance at court this morning where police expect a guilty plea to be entered by him. In total, 8 blocks of cheddar cheese were recovered and restored by police! Please keep reporting shoplifting offences as your local team do monitor the regular offenders to get them identified, arrested, and charged for shoplifting offences. If people are considerably prolific, then police can consider post-conviction restraining orders and exclusion notices to people to deter offending so please do report any offences to police. The Met is cracking down on street crime, like shoplifting, people doing drugs and phone-snatching. 

We’ve put hundreds more officers on the frontlines of community crime-fighting teams, upping visible patrols in the right ‘hot spots’ so we can deter and catch criminals.

We’re now arresting more than 1,000 extra criminals every month and seeing ‘neighbourhood crime’ down 14%.

But we know there is more to do. That’s why we’re stepping up our use of technology, increasing our operations and working with retailers to make it less appealing for criminals to commit these crimes in the first place.

If you notice anything suspicious or witness anyone shoplifting, please report it as soon as possible. These reports are invaluable in letting us build a picture of when and where shop lifters operate, meaning we can be in the right place at the right time to arrest those responsible.
